When you withdraw XRP from NBX to your own wallet, you need to show that the wallet is yours. You do this by signing a short message in the wallet. No XRP moves when you sign, and it costs nothing.
This guide uses GemWallet, a free XRP wallet you add as an extension in Google Chrome. We don't know of any other XRP wallet that can sign these messages. If you use a different wallet, see If something doesn't work.
What you need
- A PC or Mac with Google Chrome
- GemWallet in Chrome, set up and logged in
- The 2FA app you use for NBX
Why sign? The EU Travel Rule requires NBX to know who receives the crypto we send out. We check this with a service called Notabene.
Not sure what a word means? See the glossary at the bottom.
In this guide:
- Start the withdrawal in NBX (steps 1-3)
- Get the Notabene link (steps 4-6)
- Sign with GemWallet (steps 7-10)
- Finish the withdrawal in NBX (steps 11-12)
- If something doesn't work

Step by step
Step 1: Start the withdrawal
Log in to NBX. Go to Funds and find Ripple in the list. Click Withdraw.
Step 2: Enter address and amount
Click the GemWallet icon 💎 in the top right corner of Chrome and copy your XRP address. It always starts with r.
Tip: Can't see 💎? Click 🧩 next to the address bar in Chrome and choose GemWallet.
Go back to NBX and paste the address in the Withdraw To field. Enter how much you want to withdraw in Amount in XRP. Click Next.
Destination tag: Leave this field empty. You don't need a tag when you send to GemWallet.
Step 3: Choose Myself
The Verify the recipient box appears. Under Recipient, click Myself.
Step 4: Choose Connect another device
Under Wallet, click the Self-hosted Wallet tab. Then click Connect another device.
Step 5: Click Share Link
Click the green Share Link button.
Important: Don't close the NBX tab. You'll come back to it in step 11.
Step 6: Copy the link and open it in a new tab
What happens next depends on your computer. The goal is the same: copy the link and open it in Chrome.
- A share window opens: Click 🔗 or Copy next to the link. The image below shows the Windows version. On a Mac the window looks different.
- Nothing seems to happen: The link is probably already copied. Carry on.
Open a new tab in Chrome (Ctrl + T on PC, Cmd + T on Mac). Paste the link in the address bar and press Enter.
Step 7: Choose GemWallet
The link opens a separate Notabene page at connect.notabene.id. You sign here, not inside NBX. The page is called Proof of ownership. Check that Self-hosted Wallet is selected, and click GemWallet.
Step 8: Share your address
GemWallet opens a window asking if the page can see your address. Click SHARE.
Step 9: Click Verify Ownership
Your address now shows on the page. Check that it matches the address you pasted into NBX in step 2. Click Verify Ownership.
Step 10: Sign the message
GemWallet shows the Sign Message window. Click SIGN.
Good to know: This isn't a transaction. You don't send any XRP and you don't pay a fee.
The page now shows Wallet-Generated Signature. Click Continue.
When you see You're all set, you can close this tab.
Step 11: Go back to NBX and click Continue
Go back to the NBX tab. Click the green Continue button at the bottom of the box.
Step 12: Confirm the withdrawal
Check the address and amount one last time. Enter your 2FA code and click Submit.
NBX then sends you an email with a confirmation code. Enter it under Email confirmation code and click Confirm and Submit.
Done. Your XRP is on its way to GemWallet. You can follow the withdrawal under Funds → Withdrawals.
If something doesn't work
- I use a different XRP wallet. Install GemWallet in Chrome, set up a new wallet and withdraw to it. From there you can send the XRP on to the wallet you normally use.
- I can't paste the link. Go back to the NBX tab, click Share Link again and look for 🔗 or Copy in the window that opens.
- The GemWallet window doesn't open. Check that you're logged in to GemWallet, and that you opened the link in Chrome.
- I'm sending to another exchange. You don't need to sign. Choose the Hosted Account tab under Wallet in step 4 and find the exchange in the list. Remember the destination tag from the exchange. Without it, your XRP can be lost.
- I closed the NBX tab. Start again from step 1.
- I'm stuck. Contact NBX support and we'll help you.
